                                                                                                        CROSS VINE
Bignonia capreolata is a member of the Bignoniaceae family and it is native to the central and southern United States.
The common name refers to the cross-shaped pattern revealed when the stem is cut this pattern results from four radial wedges of phloem embedded within the stem’s xylem.
The vine climbs without twining but does produce tendrils and it produces long tubular flowers which are red and yellow to orange and red and frequently have a mocha fragrance, they appear in late winter and in to spring but this depends on the source as some say it is not fragrant at all.
The vine often climbs very high, with leaves only remaining on the uppermost portion of the plant. The looks at its best when managed as is shown in the image.
It tolerates poor soil and dry conditions where many other plants would wither and die. If planted in the shade, it will scramble up any available structure or tree to find sunlight. It is frost hardy to – 10 degrees C.
YOU WILL ENJOY THIS HARD TO FIND VINE!
