STROPHANTHUS SPECIOSUS
FOREST TAIL FLOWER or CORKSCREW FLOWER
Strophanthus speciosus is native to Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland and is a member of the Apocynaceae family.
This plant is rare and under threat in its native habitat.
It grows to 4 metres as a shrub or can reach 10 metres as a vine. It flowers in spring to early summer. The flowers are red with golden starfish like tails in abundance that are sweetly fragrant.
It grows in full sun as well as dappled shade it is attractive to butterflies and is a good nesting spot for birds.
It is said to be used to treat snake bite in humans and cattle.
