AKEBIA QUINATA
CHOCOLATE VINE or FIVE LEAF AKEBIA
Akebia quinata is from the Lardizabalaceae family and originates from China, Korea and Japan.
The Chocolate vine also known as Five Leaf Akebia is a semi-deciduous fast growing climber with chocolate scented flowers. The flowers first appear in late winter and continue into spring on old wood and is a mass of flower.
As the growth appears it will flower on new growth as well. It will spot flower for most of the year. In a good summer and if cross pollinated these can be followed by very unusual large sausage-shaped pale purple fruits.
It is a fast grower and it grows to 8m and in cooler areas rarely more than 3m. It likes full sun but will do well in part shade. It is frost hardy.
ENJOY THIS FABULOUS VINE!
