HOLMSKIOLDIA SPESIOSA
CHINESE HAT PLANT or PARASOL FLOWER
Holmskioldia speciosa is native to Eastern South Africa and is a member of the Lamiaceae family.
It is a summer shrub up to about 3 metres x 2.5 metres with blue flowers and mauve calyces that appear in late spring through summer but the calyces remain colourful for a greater period.
It is best grown in full sun or partial shade the Chinese Hat Plant can get by on average moisture, but will require supplemental water during dry periods.
The plant is kept at its best if pruning the canes in late winter or early spring or you can train them on supports as if they were vines.
The small and colorful flowers are often attractive to bees and garden birds.
