CLYTOSTOMA CALLISTEGIOIDES
LAVENDER TRUMPET VINE
Clytostoma callistegioides or Lavender Trumpet Vine is a member of the Bignoniaceae family and is native to Brazil and South America.
It is an evergreen vine that grows moderately fast from 5 metres x 5 metres with tendrils that cling to structures creating a moderately dense foliage cover, if the tendrils do not contact support they drop off. The new foliage is a bronze colour and the leaves are around 75mm long by 35mm wide and are glossy green.
The flowers appear in spring and summer and spot flowering at other times. They are 75mm wide trumpet shaped and lavender with darker purple veins and appear in pairs.
The vine prefers full sun or partial shade; it is drought tolerant with possibly extra water in drought conditions. It does not mind heavy soils and is frost tolerant.
It forms a good cover for fences and will grow over an arbour readily and I have seen it used as a ground cover quite effectively. I have found this vine to be under used but very suited to Australian conditions; the images above are from our garden.
