IPOMOEA ALBA
GIANT MOONFLOWER VINE
Ipomoea alba is a member of the Convolulaceae family and evolved from Florida and tropical America.
The Giant Moonflower is a vigorous twining vine that is fast growing in hot weather. It is also known as the Evening Glory because its buds open in late afternoon and last only until day light transforms them into a limp mass. It is a perennial but because of its popularity is used as an annual in colder areas.
The Moonflower buds are 100mm long and the flowers are a spectacular 150 – 200mm in diameter and are fluted funnels of pure white with a touch on yellow in the quilting. The flowers are delightfully fragrant in the warm summer nights.
It prefers full to part sun and likes well drained moisture retentive soils but is not too fussy and can stand short dry spells and is conducive to coastal planting. It can be deciduous in colder areas.
The Moonflower can grow to 15 metres x 15 metres if allowed but to be appreciated for its fragrance and flowers is best kept lower on a pergola or arbour etc.
It can be pruned as required for control or shaping
THIS IS A GARDENER’S DELIGHT, ENJOY!
