Hoya macgillivrayii is a member of the Asclepiadaceae family and is native to Queensland Australia.
This cultivar is from the Langkelly Creek region of Queensland as are all of the species and they are named after the regions they were discovered.
This cultivar has large, 60 – 80 mm flowers that are deep red to purple and can be almost black with a small white centre, and there are 5 – 10 flowers in each umbel depending on the age of the vine. The flowers are fragrant and can last up to 12 days.
It is, in some cases, necessary to wait a short while for it to flower however well worth the wait. I have found that plants grown by cuttings will flower quite readily.
It likes to be in partial shade but if required can tolerate warm morning sun.
There is some confusion regarding the spelling of the name, above is the correct spelling.
